Recommend doing once a week.
1. Reboot your computer and let Windows start the boot process.
2. When you see the black screen start pressing your F8 key. Keep hitting the F8 key until you see the Windows XP Startup Menu.
3. Choose option # 1 (Safe Mode) by selecting it with your arrow keys.
4. Press the Enter key to begin booting into Safe Mode. Note, it will take a few moments longer than a regular boot. You will see the MS Window XP message, press your enter key. You will see many lines scroll by and then it will stop. DO NOT panic it will pause for a while and then complete. Your machine is not locked up, be patient!
5. You are in Safe Mode when Windows displays Safe Mode in all four corners of the desktop and a Safe Mode message appears.
6. Disable your screen saver. You can do this by right clicking anywhere on your desktop, and selecting properties. In the properties window, select the screen saver tab. In the drop down menu select “none”. Click on the apply button and the OK button.
7. Close any windows you may have open.
8. Go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup
9. You want to check all options that have anything other than a zero beside it. This will clean up all of your temp files etc from your drive.
10. Go to start>programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter.
11. Select the Defrag Now button. Defrag may take a while to run, especially if you haven’t done it in a while.
12. Once it is done quit out of the defrag program.
